We originally created Aviary as a unique book for a collaborative project for the 2011 Sitka Invitational Exhibition in Portland, Oregon. Original etchings are by Tallmadge Doyle, from various prints in the following series of works, Contemplari Natura, the Celestial Menagerie, Mysterium Cosmographicum and Homage to Kepler. The imagery in this book juxtaposes an aviary of birds with the universal mathematical order and geometric shapes associated with the cosmos. The subject of this book is about an inherent connection with the mysteries of nature on earth and the mysteries of the universe as a whole. Aviary was designed by Susan Lowdermilk and constructed together by both artists.
The book shown in the photos here is the deluxe edition that currently is on hand at 23 Sandy. This variable edition consists of three books, with the variable being the hand-coloring on the original bird etchings.
Also note: Currently in the design stages is the second edition of Aviary, which will be a digital reproduction of one of the three originals. This version is expected to be complete in early 2014. Please if you would like to reserve a copy of the digital version.
